Swasth Shareer Surakshit Jeevan

Swasth Shareer Surakshit Jeevan is one such special initiative of Amar Ujala Foundation to provide healthcare services to meet the immediate health care needs of the marginalized community in remote rural areas through standalone camps. Amar Ujala Foundation aims to provide comprehensive health services – curative, preventive, promotive and referral, to a large number of people in selected intervention areas.

In India, where on one hand the cities have ample of medical resources at hand, the remote villages on the other hand have scarce medical coverage.  Although the government has made provisions for Primary Health Centres in such remote villages, but the government machinery lacks in many dimensions to fulfill the needs of the underprivileged.

The situation calls for timely care and diagnosis which can reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality especially among young children and women.

AUF has adopted 19 location – 3 in Bareilly(Manjha, Rajau, Milak Majhara), 3 in Aligarh, 1 in Moradabad(Ratanpur Kala), 5 in Dehradun(Sarkhet, Dubda-Dubdi, Sahasradhara, and 2 in haridwar), 3 in Agra(Mathura, vrindavan and firozabad) and 4 in Haldwani. The primary focus is to equip the remotely located PHCs so that it functions with more efficiency, and the residents can take most advantage from it.

AUF has also purchased a mobile medical checkup lab, which can perform 23 different types of biochemical blood tests. These tests can examine a number of diseases. We also have a specially designed medical van which can reach remote locations easily, and facilitate the health camps. Along with the medical facilities, the van is also equipped for screening movie shows.

The Strength of this campaign

The strength of Swasth Shareer Surakshit Jeevan is that the basic onus of organizing these camps in the hands of the villagers. These camps are organized only in the local PHC(Primary Health Care Centres) owned is by district administration,  by the villagers themselves. The major strengths of this model of health care is –

  • Having the camps in local PHC’s strengthens the already existing system of health care for the villagers.
  • Even after the camp is over, residents can always return to the Doctor in Local PHC for reference and feedbacks, as well as in case of emergency.
  • The PHCs already have medicines and trained Doctors for checkup. But during these camps, a team of expert Doctors, specialized in various discipline join in, to assist local Doctors.
  • Since the villagers themselves take the responsibility of such camps, maximum participation from the villagers is seen.
  • Amar Ujala being a newspaper, gets a chance to interact intensely with the villagers and highlight issues through the newspaper, for the overall development of the villages.
  • The local villagers get a platform to raise their voices and interact with Doctors and Journalists, to uplift the living standards of the area.
