Every year, our nation requires about 4 crore units of blood. Out of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood are available.
The gift of blood is the gift of life. There is no substitute for human blood. Every two seconds someone needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year.
More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
Realizing the urgent need of blood donation across the country, Amar Ujala Foundation has organized more than 300 blood donation camps in 7 states between 2014 and 2015. The unique feature of this campaign is that all the units of blood collected go to the Blood Banks located under the local District Hospital, where maximum number of patients getting operated, who come under below poverty line category are benefitted.
The enthusiasm with which the volunteers had donated blood can be noted from the fact that often during these blood donation camps, we had to refuse volunteers from donating due to lack of space at the blood banks for the collection. With our high spirited endeavor, AUF has been able to provide regular supply of blood to the blood banks in cities like Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Dehradun for months.
AUF has not only given new hope of lives to those who needed blood, but also given a chance to many, to contribute meaningfully to the society.
In order to make the task more easier, AUF has also launched a one of its kind blood donation helpline in Kanpur. Any person in need can call our helpline number which is live 24×7, and find a donor nearest to him.
Also, Blood Donors Day and Blood Donation Day had been a celebrated extension of the campaign. On these occasions, AUF had organized all unit blood donation campaign, in which all the 19 units of Amar Ujala, participated with full energy and support. We collected more than 1000 units of blood in just 2 days.
